Stealing Buddha’s Dinner by Bich Minh Nguyen is a book that literally hits close to home for Brilliance Audio. I moved to the area from Detroit over 10 years ago when I started at Brilliance and can attest that living in this conservative region of the state was quite an adjustment for a young twenty-something. I can’t imagine what it must have been like for a Vietnamese immigrant child a decade prior. And yet, through Bich Minh Nguyen’s writing, I can come very close. I can taste the flavors of America in the ‘80s – crispy Shake ‘n Bake, salty French onion dip, SweeTarts – and understand her longing for that way of life. Her childhood experiences of that time are brought to life by the colorful pop culture that makes them universal. Stealing Buddha’s Dinner deftly shifts out of the Midwest and into every American suburb where children are searching for identity.
Recently, Stealing Buddha’s Dinner was chosen as the 2009 Read Along the Lakeshore selection in West Michigan, adding to its national recognitions. It received the 2005 PEN/Jerard Fund for a Memoir in Progress, was named a Kiriyama Prize Notable Book, and made several 2007 Best Book lists, including those of the Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, and Saveur Magazine. Stealing Buddha’s Dinner would be an excellent recommendation for Generation X audiobook fans. Just warn them… after listening they will want to pull out their Best of the ‘80s CDs and long for Skittles.
