His birth will herald the publication of many works on our most beloved and arguably greatest President. Of the many works available for audio publication, Lincoln: The Biography of a Writer by Fred Kaplan is, to my mind, the most original of its kind. It seeks to understand Lincoln through language: from the books and literature that first fueled his intense desire for learning; to his own speeches, legal arguments and love letters. Lincoln’s humble beginnings are now almost mythic in their spartan nature. Born of simple circumstances—“of undistinguished families…second families…” he lost his mother at the age of ten and his father moved the family to Indiana where he grew up in the wild woods. “Of course when I came of age I did not know much. Still somehow I could, read, write and cipher…but that was all.” From such humble beginnings, Lincoln thereafter made extraordinary efforts to attain knowledge. He became a voracious reader, and self-taught man who transformed himself into “a first-rate literary talent—a master storyteller with an earthy wit, sharp logic and an ear for poetic phrasing.” And since, Lincoln, no president has written his own words when addressing the nation. It is a reminder to all Americans that “the effective and honest use of language is a necessity for a successful democracy.” Amen to that.
