THE NEW 13-DIGIT ISBN!
Since its inception in 1970, the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) has been internationally recognized as the identification system for the publishing industry and book trade. An ISBN accompanies a publication from its production and onwards throughout the supply and distribution chain. Currently the barcode based on the ISBN is called EAN-10. With the exception of the United States and Canada, retail products from around the world are marked with EAN-8 and EAN-13 symbols. The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) has recommended use of the global EAN-13 barcode and created a new ISO standard to join the rest of the world in its use, effective January 1, 2007. Also on that date, the EAN-13 barcode will replace the current 12-digit UPC barcode on all US and Canadian retail products .
The revised ISO standard for the ISBN represents the first change to the structure of the ISBN since its inception. The new ISBN will consist of 13 digits: the 3-digit prefix that identifies the book industry, (currently 978), followed by the core 9-digit number and the recalculated final check digit that validates the internal integrity of the whole number. It will be identical to the EAN “Bookland” 13-digit code that already appears encoded in the bar code printed on the back of a book or audiobook.
INDUSTRY-WIDE CHANGES AFFECT US ALL!
It is essential that all parts of the industry are ready to work with 13-digit ISBNs beginning January 1, 2007, as all books published after that date must carry 13-digit ISBNs. Booksellers will need to process 13-digit ISBNs for ordering, invoices, and other functions beginning January 1, 2007 and may wish to be in a position to do so as soon as possible. There is likely to be a fairly long transition period leading up to the deadline for the adoption of 13-digit ISBN.
To assist booksellers in making the transition between now and January 2007, Brilliance Audio has made plans to be compliant with the new ISO standard on January 1, 2005. As recommended by the Book Industry Study Group, we plan to use a dual numbering approach throughout the transition period. This means that we will be assigning both the ISBN-10 and the ISBN-13 to each new imprint beginning January 1, 2005 and will display both ISBNs on our packaging and sales materials. All pre-2005 Brilliance Audio titles will have only the existing ISBN-10 assigned to them until we near the January 1, 2007 mandatory conversion date.
For the ease of our customers, Brilliance Audio will continue to present and advertise new 2005 titles using the ISBN-10. However, to remain compliant with the upcoming standards, Brilliance Audio will:
••••Display both ISBN-13 and ISBN-10 on all new titles publishing after
••••December 2004 in both online and print catalogs (see example 2).
••••Show both ISBN-13 and ISBN-10 (in a human-readable form) and the
••••13-digit EAN barcode on our packaging for all new 2005 titles (see
••••example 1).
••••Communicate dual information via ONIX and/or customer-specific new
••••title submission methodologies.
••••Receive orders using either the ISBN-10 or the ISBN-13, for new 2005
••••releases.
••••List both ISBN-13 and ISBN-10 on our mailed invoices and packing slips
••••shipped inside the physical cartons/orders.
Brilliance Audio will continue providing dual ISBNs until we have confirmed that all of our trading partners are prepared to receive only the new ISBN-13. We will discontinue the use of dual ISBNs when the mandatory date of January 1, 2007 arrives.
