| Dear Retailers: It isnt often that editors are given the opportunity to speak directly to the librarian, reseller, wholesaler, much less the end userthe listener of the audios we produce. So I am pleased to have the opportunity to speak with passionate advocacy for the unabridged audio of Descent Into Chaos, which is a critical analysis of current U.S. foreign policy in Central Asia written by Ahmed Rashid, a Pakistani journalist with a grasp of the regions politics and turmoil that no western writer can match. 9/11 effected this nation very deeply. It became clear that there were forces in the world allied against America, deeply resentful, jealous and with malice in their hearts against our very ideals. And yet, to my mind it was our ideals that we sacrificed firston a wave of patriotic fury as we rushed into in a war against terror. With fear overwhelming our reason, we as a nation stood idly and passively by the way side as the nation plunged deeper and deeper into a quagmire in the Middle East. We, as a nation, are beginning to sober up to the long-term consequences of those earlier decisions. We have an upcoming election which in many ways will be a referendum on our recent past, but also of our hopes for the future. I believe, America needs to become better partners and collaborators with the world at large. To accomplish that we must become better listeners, especially of criticism. Ahmed Rashid has been called the voice of reason amid the confusion and chaos of Central Asia. I think his thoughts on the United States failures in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia are worth considering, soberly and rationally. It is also, one of the most eloquently written books I have ever had the pleasure to read or listen to. (Disclaimerthe narrator is a personal friend, but also a three time recipient of the AudioFile Earphones award for excellence.) I believe that Jefferson once said that an educated and activated citizenry is the surest defense of democracy. Well, Descent Into Chaos is a lively book and audio, part dissent, part admonishment, part prayer that America will reawaken to its true purposeto rule truly is to serve.
