  • Cuckoo's Egg
    Cuckoo's Egg C. J. Cherryh
    Narrator:
    Peter Ganim
    Learn More
    Synopsis
Cuckoo's Egg is a novel by science fiction and fantasy author C. J. Cherryh, set in her Alliance-Union universe. It was nominated for the Hugo Award and longlisted the Locus Award for Best Novel. It was later included, along with Cherryh's novel Serpent's Reach, in the 2005 omnibus volume The Deep Beyond. The audiobook introduces the alien Shonunin race, and the plot of the novel concerns a male Shonun raising a human boy. They named him Thorn. They told him he was of their people, although he was so different. He was ugly in their eyes, strange, sleek-skinned instead of furred, clawless, different. Yet he was of their power class: judge-warriors, the elite, the fighters, the defenders. Thorn knew that his difference was somehow very important—but not important enough to prevent murderous conspiracies against him, against his protector, against his caste, and perhaps against the peace of the world. But when the crunch came, when Thorn finally learned what his true role in life was to be, that the future of two worlds might hinge on him, then he had to stand alone to justify his very existence.

    Synopsis
Between a rock and a hard place…To Sergeant Zeke Hayes, the expression has always been a non-factor. Rainier to Vancouver. That all changes when Rayna Chestain enters his world. From the moment Z snatches Rayna from the lair of a South Asian slave trafficker, his inner grizzly roars to life. But Z isn’t wired to be a one-woman man. Growing up an orphan on the streets of Seattle has taught him that beyond a few hours in a dungeon, trust means disappointment and love leads to agony. Now he’s sheltering Rayna in the remote wilderness from a fiend who now wants his pound of revenge flesh from her. Z’s never done anything more right in his life. But wanting her? Dreaming of her beneath him, surrendering to his passion and domination? It’s the most forbidden fruit he can crave, and the only thing he can’t stop thinking about. The only way out is to confront the reality of what Rayna has done to him and the mountain she’s moved in his intractable heart.

    Synopsis
She's too good for me, but that's not gonna stop me from taking her. I'm not a good man, but I've never claimed to be. I'm the muscle for the Valetti crime family, and I fit the part with my hard, ripped abs, broad shoulders and cocky attitude. I've never wanted for anything, until I met her.... A woman I can never have. She's forbidden. Just being seen together would put a target on both our backs. I can't help imagining those lush, sassy lips wrapped around the one part of me that doesn't give a damn she's off-limits. All I wanted was a taste of her tempting, forbidden curves. One moment of hot, wild passion, and I'm f--king addicted. Everything and everyone else be damned. I'm making her mine. This is a standalone, full-length mafia romance with a filthy-mouthed, possessive bad boy and no cheating. Guaranteed HEA. This title was formerly called Bad Girl.
  • Cugel's Saga
    Cugel's Saga Jack Vance
    Narrator:
    Arthur Morey

    Synopsis
'Vance sees himself in the tradition of popular fantasy writers, but his classic writing style is also comparagle to Homer’s Odyssey, and Cervante's Don Quixote. Though the Cugel tales may lack the scope and pathos of the greatest adventure yarns, in the twenty-first century, they may be as close as one gets to the celebration of epic human perseverance.'--editor, Brilliance Audio Cugel’s Saga, published 17 years after Eyes of the Overworld, is the second novel that features the scoundrel and trickster, Cugel. Again, Cugel tests wits with Iucounu and acquires rudimentary powers himself. “Cugel the Clever [is] a rogue so venal and unscrupulous that that he makes Harry Flashman look like Dudley Do-Right. How could you not love a guy like that? .... Judging from the number of times that Cugel has come back ... you can’t keep a bad man down.” —George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire. “Cugel the Clever [is] a liar and thief in a doomed world of liars and thieves.... Probably the least attractive hero it would be possible to find, struggling through a universe like a Hieronymus Bosch painting, a hero only in that nearly everybody else he encounters in that universe is on the make too, and yet the Cugel stories are howlingly funny.” —Kage Baker, author of Empress of Mars.

    Paul Boehmer

    Synopsis
How to live in a supposedly faithless world threatened by religious fundamentalism? Terry Eagleton, formidable thinker and renowned cultural critic, investigates in this thought-provoking audiobook the contradictions, difficulties, and significance of the modern search for a replacement for God. Engaging with a phenomenally wide range of ideas, issues, and thinkers from the Enlightenment to today, Eagleton discusses the state of religion before and after 9/11, the ironies surrounding Western capitalism's part in spawning not only secularism but also fundamentalism, and the unsatisfactory surrogates for the Almighty invented in the post-Enlightenment era. The author reflects on the unique capacities of religion, the possibilities of culture and art as modern paths to salvation, the so-called war on terror's impact on atheism, and a host of other topics of concern to those who envision a future in which just and compassionate communities thrive. Lucid, stylish, and entertaining in his usual manner, Eagleton presents a brilliant survey of modern thought that also serves as a timely, urgently needed intervention into our perilous political present.

    Dan John Miller

    Synopsis
A Culturematic is a little machine for making culture. It’s an ingenuity engine. Once wound up and released, the Culturematic acts as a probe into the often-alien world of contemporary culture, to test the atmosphere, to see what life it can sustain, to see who responds and how. Culturematics start small but can scale up ferociously, bootstrapping themselves as they go. Because they are so inexpensive, we can afford to fire off a multitude of Culturematics simultaneously. This is evolutionary strategy, iterative innovation, and rapid prototyping all at once. Culturematics are fast, cheap, and out of control. Perhaps as important, they fail early and often. They are the perfect antidote to a world where we cannot guess what’s coming next. In Culturematic, anthropologist Grant McCracken describes these little machines and helps the reader master them. Examples are drawn from NFL Films, Twitter, the Apple Genius Bar, Starbucks, Ford, SNL Digital Shorts, Restoration Hardware, UNICEF, J. Crew, Pie Lab, USA Network, and the GEICO gecko. For the traditional producers of culture — the creators of movies, design, advertising, publishing, magazines, newspapers, and corporate R&D — this book will inspire new innovation and creativity. For the emerging producers of culture — the digital players — this book will serve as a practical handbook. Culturematic: our app for creating the world anew.
